Student lands her “dream job” with Rangers

By Topher Howard

She was 10 years old when her uncle took her to her first baseball game. He told her about the intricacies of the game and its storied history. It was on that day when her passion and love for the game would be developed that would lead her to be interning for the Texas Rangers.

Deanna Damon, a senior ad/PR major from Round Rock, always knew she was going to work in baseball, but never did she think it would be for the Texas Rangers. She holds two positions within the organization: community relations and foundation events team.

As a community relations officer, Damon acts as the link between current players, past players and fans. She is responsible for responding to all e-mails as well as assisting in the planning of some of the Texas Rangers biggest events.

“It’s really rewarding to see how baseball brings families together,” Damon said. “When we give out donations to kids who are sick or in need, it can be the happiest day in their life. I’m just glad I can be apart of it.”

The Texas Rangers alumni weekend is one of the biggest events sponsored by her department. The goal of the event is to receive donations, which will be sent out to non-profits within the community, in exchange for autographed memorabilia and pictures from the alumni on hand.

Damon is currently in the process of organizing an event that will take place at the end of April. The event, called Triple Play, is a silent auction featuring a game show where all of the current players are the participants.

“This event will be a lot of fun, for the players partaking in the game show as well as for those attending the event,” Damon said.

Damon’s most memorable moment while working for the Rangers came when she answered the phone and on the other end was her childhood hero, Rusty Greer.

“When he introduced himself over the phone, I almost screamed. It was very hard for me to stay professional,” Damon said.

Damon has had other experience working for baseball teams. She held a public relations position with the Round Rock Express, which is the AAA team for the Houston Astros. Her job entailed handing out promotional items even going as far as to stand on top of the dugout during the game to help get the fans pumped up.

Damon’s uncle, Eric Nadel, is coming up on his 30th season broadcasting for the Texas Rangers. Ever since taking Damon to her first baseball game, he has been the biggest influence on Damon’s passion and love for baseball.

Working for the Rangers has given her access to a lot of free tickets to Rangers games as well as some Dallas Stars games. She said that she has taken full advantage of that opportunity.

Damon has enjoyed her time at TCU and is excited about graduating in May. She is confident that the skills she has learned  in the Schieffer School have prepared her for what lies ahead.
