Publications win SPJ, TIPA, CNBAM awards
Image magazine
and the DailySkiff.com Web site have been recognized as best
publications by both the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association
(TIPA) and the Society of Professional Journalists region that
includes colleges in Texas and Oklahoma.
Image magazine won the TIPA sweepstakes award, which is based
on overall awards and first in overall excellence at the TIPA annual
convention held April 3-5 in College Station. The magazine won
the first place Mark of Excellence (MOE) award at the recent Region
8 SPJ spring conference in New Orleans.
In TIPA’s affiliated Web sites category, DailySkiff.com
won first place in the general web site excellence category, and
it won the first place MOE for affiliated Web sites from SPJ.
In all, the publications’ staffs have won 13 awards, and
26 individual student journalists have won or shared in 43 awards
in individual categories.
As first-place regional SPJ winners, the magazine and Web site
are up for national honors against the other regional winners,
and the national winners will be announced in mid-May. Individually,
three student journalists—Ana Bak, Michael Bou-Nacklie, and
Tim Bella—won first-place in the SPJ category for online
sports reporting for their DailySkiff.com multi-media story package
that detailed the men’s basketball player Luke Tauscher’s
recovery from a potentially career-ending back injury. They also
advance to the national round of judging.
In the same rounds of
competitions, the TCU Daily Skiff won second place in the TIPA
Best of Show competition and third place in its overall excellence
category for daily newspapers, and the newspaper won a third place
Mark of Excellence award for best daily newspaper in the SPJ competition.
The Daily Skiff also received an honorable mention in the same
category at the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors convention.
At
the recent national College Newspaper Business and Advertising
Managers national convention in San Antonio, The Daily Skiff and
