Image, Daily Skiff, DailySkiff.Com winners vie for SPJ national best Image magazine, the TCU Daily Skiff, and the DailySkiff.Com Web site are up for six top national awards later this month in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence competitions. Staffs and contributors to the student publications qualified for the national competition after earning as many first-place awards in the Region 8 MOE competition that comprises Texas and Oklahoma. Region 8 winners will compete among the 12 regional first-place winners nationwide in the respective categories, and the national MOE winners will be announced in May. This year, collegiate journalists submitted more than 3,300 entries in 39 categories across SPJ’s 12 regions. Image magazine, a runner-up in 2006 as one of three national finalists for best student magazine and the 2007 Sweepstakes winner at the recent Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, once again is up for the top national award after receiving the Region 8 MOE. Reporter Christina Ruffini, who won the first-place MOE for non-fictional magazine article, is the other Image national entry. The TCU Daily Skiff, which earlier won 18 TIPA awards, won a regional third-place MOE in the best daily newspaper category and has two national entrants: Andrew Chavez, who won the first-place MOE for breaking news reporting, and Stephen Spillman for breaking news photography. DailySkiff.com, which incorporates the Daily Skiff print product but also features other stories, packages, and weekend sports coverage, also won two first-place awards for online news reporting and online sports reporting.
