At the end of last month, a blockbuster event occurred at TCU that was so large even Derek and the Dominos couldn’t have been the opening act. Or Velvet Revolver. Or any hip-hop consortium starring this group and featuring that person. Five mega-stars were assembled, including front man Bob Schieffer, who took the stage at venerable Ed Landreth Auditorium. Campaigns team finishes in NSAC top 10

NSAC LogoThe Schieffer School’s Advertising Campaigns team finished in the top 10 nationally of the National Student Advertising Competition in Louisville, Ky., June 8.

The national competition brought together the nation’s top advertising students from the 15 regions of the American Advertising Federation, which sponsors the competition.  TCU represented District 10, which comprises Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico.  The team that finished second to TCU, the University of Texas, also participated in the national competition as a wild-card selection.

This year’s corporate sponsor was Coca-Cola, and the challenge was to market Coke Classic to the 13-to-24-year-old market.  The teams researched the product and its competition and devised an integrated communications campaign.

The Schieffer School campaigns team finished eighth in the nation among more than 100 teams who originally entered.  The national championship was won by the University of Minnesota.

The TCU team has been invited to Coca-Cola’s corporate headquarters in Atlanta to share its strategy of appealing to a growing market of Hispanic teens.

“The reason we are so proud of our students is that they went head-to-head with some of the top advertising programs in the toughest district in the nation and won a clear victory,” said Tommy Thomason, director of the Schieffer School.  “Then they established the school’s advertising program among the nation’s elite by finishing in the top 10.”

Mike Wood, professional in residence in advertising, was the adviser for the team, with help from Dr. Stacy Landreth-Grau and Robert Largen of the advertising/public relations faculty.

More than 800 people filled Ed Landreth Hall for the third annual Schieffer Symposium on campus March 27.

Bob Schieffer hosted, welcoming guests Tim Russert of NBC,  Jan Greenberg of ABC,  Bill Keller, editor of The New York Times, and Earl Graves, publisher of Black Enterprise magazine.

The focus of the symposium, titled “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of the News:  The Media’s Role in a Democracy,” was media coverage of current events, including the Scooter Libby trial, in which Russert testified.  The panel also discussed the firing of eight U.S. attorneys by Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez.

“If I could have a dinner party to talk about the news, I couldn’t think of a better group of people to invite,” Schieffer said.
